Satish
Joshi
Textured two-dimensional surfaces
are a hallmark of Satish Joshi's
mono prints and paintings. He utilizes surface textures
that interact with a strong
painterly play of light and
shadows to create a sculptural
illusion on a flat surface.
Satish has an idiosyncratic mono print technique of his own creation. Satish uses a prepared acrylic bed for his mono prints. He first builds a three-dimensional surface pattern with acrylics on a plywood platform. He then chooses the colors for a specific print, applies the selected paints to the plate surface, and takes an impression. He immediately wipes the plate clean in preparation for taking another original print. He then designs and applies a different color selection to the plate for the next original print, thus creating the same image but with a unique color treatment. Each print differs dramatically from the others in color and mood. Each print is an individual work of art.

Born in Rawalpindi prior to partition, Satish Joshi grew up in New Delhi; he has lived and worked in the New York metropolitan area since 1969. He is among the first Indian artists to enjoy a successful career as both practicing artist and teacher in the west. He has taught at the renowned Riverdale Country School since 1971, and is now the Director of Community Arts and Artist-in-Residence for the School.
